MONEYTREE ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM - KOLEJ PROFESIONAL MARA (KPM) STUDENTS GET A TASTE OF REAL LIFE, PRACTICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPERIENCE

Petaling Jaya, Dec 14th, 2009 – MoneyTree recently conducted its First-of-its-Kind Entrepreneurship program for 38 “Kolej Profesional MARA” (KPM) Melaka students that was held from December 1st to December 7th at the German Malaysian Institute (GMI) in Bangi.

The training program is a 7-Day Entrepreneurship program that provides the students with an opportunity to experience what Entrepreneurship is, through a specially designed simulation that mimics the market conditions of the real business world. Entrepreneurship lessons are injected throughout the simulation to allow students to learn, and immediately put into practice what they have learnt to grow their respective virtual businesses.

CEO MoneyTree Asia Pacific Ltd, Mr Michael Reyes stated, “The program is specially designed to allow students to not only learn the theoretical part of what Entrepreneurship entails, but to also allow them to translate the knowledge into action through the simulation. The students have to make decisions for their virtual businesses during the simulation, and these decisions are dependent on market conditions determined by the simulation. Business loans, Marketing, Research & Development and Advertising are some of the key areas students would have to pay attention to during the simulation to ensure their enterprises generate revenue and profits.”

Besides participating in the simulation, KPM Melaka students were also required to set up small businesses at flea markets for 2 days during the program to obtain real life, practical experience in setting up businesses and in running the businesses they set up.

MoneyTree Director of Special Initiatives, Mr UV Wong stated, “We wanted to make the program a wholesome program where students would also experience Entrepreneurship through practical sessions which would hone their communications skills, sales and marketing skills, help them overcome the fear of rejection, and obtain hands-on experience in the setting up of a business. Hence, the idea of having the students set up real businesses, selling real products to real customers, and dealing with real money was introduced. We wanted to train them to look at revenue, profit margins, marketing strategies, and teamwork in the process of starting their small enterprises.”

Muhamad Zuri Iskandar, one of the students from KPM Melaka said, “I hope this program will continue to be taught in other Universities / Colleges as it helps us understand the challenges faced by Entrepreneurs in the business world. This program definitely provided us with the knowledge and practical experience to face those challenges in the future.”

MONEYTREE YES CHALLENGE “BIG PITCH” EVENT – TURNING YOUNG ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS’ DREAMS INTO REALITIES…

Petaling Jaya, August 11th, 2009 – MoneyTree conducted its Young Entrepreneur Startup (YES) Challenge “BIG PITCH” event last Saturday at Bangunan Bakti Siti Hasmah, TTDI. The event, which was sponsored by Taylor’s University College, was attended by more than 130 people consisting guests from the media, YES Challenge Partners, YES Challenge Advisory Panel and invited guests.

The “BIG PITCH” is the final stage of the YES Challenge, where the TOP 5 teams are required to present their ideas to a group of more than 100 private investors and pitch for start-up funds amounting to a maximum of RM 25,000 per team to allow their business ideas to take off. This is the first time a crowd – sourcing initiative of this scale has ever been attempted in Malaysia.

Mr Nazrin Hassan, CEO of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd stated, “Some of the presentations and pitching by these young aspiring entrepreneurs were amazing, and quite a few of them surpassed the quality of those who are pitching for bigger funds in the market. I think MoneyTree has done a great job in setting up this platform to allow Young Aspiring Entrepreneurs to turn their dreams into reality.”

Dr Sivapalan, Special Advisor to Technopreneur Association Malaysia (TeAM) added, “Looking at the quality of their business ideas, the commitment and hard work they have put in, and the Enthusiasm they have displayed, I must say that my faith in the Malaysian youths has been restored once again.”

Guests can “invest” in the teams by pledging financial support for the new start-ups. Guests were exceedingly enthusiastic about investing in these new, promising start ups, as they now have the opportunity to play the role of Mini – Venture Capitalists. Of the total solicited by the 5 teams, an excess of RM 97,000 in commitment and pledges was secured by the YES Challenge teams during the “BIG PITCH” event, with more pledges coming in by this week.

The TOP 5 teams that pitched for funds during the “BIG PITCH” event are Entrée, TryThisOut!, Student Media, Fitness In Training and Buttered Toast. These teams will now implement their business ideas in the following 15 weeks. At the end of the 15-week period, if their business venture makes profit, or is poised to make profits in the future, they will be flipped over to the next phase, where they would be pitching for a maximum of RM 75,000 to scale their business ideas up. These teams would also be brought on road shows to participating Universities and Colleges to inspire the next generation of Young Entrepreneurs. The aim is to make them the next Malaysian Entrepreneur Idol to serve as role models to the young Aspiring Entrepreneurs.

Participants of the MoneyTree YES Challenge consist of students from more than 10 Universities / Colleges nationwide, which include, among others, Taylor’s University College, Open University Malaysia (OUM), Nilai University College, Kolej IKIP, Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College, Tunku Abdul Rahman College, University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaya (UM), Nottingham University and many others.

The company planned expand its academies into areas like Penang, Johor Baharu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Ipoh and Kuantan, he said.

Currently, it has an academy in Petaling Jaya.

Classes are divided into three levels, namely junior levels for those between nine to 13 years old, apprentice level for 14 to 18 years old and entrepreneur level for those aged 19 and above.

Andrew said the students are taken on an educational journey to give them an insight to the spoken and sometimes unspoken rules that govern the world of commerce and industry. We believed in setting a right financial path for the younger generation before they move into adulthood.

Students are also given exposure about actual account practices in the commercial world, current market conditions and the business and investment landscape, he said.

20080513 Providing the Platform for Young Investors

Kuala Lumpur, 12 May 2008

Teenagers who are in search of a deeper understanding of the different investment instruments available , may not need to be in the dark for much longer.

My MONEY TREE Sdn Bhd, a local company which runs a proprietary investment and business program, recently initiated the set up of the Young Investors International (YII) with a group of young entrepreneurs. The objective of YII is primarily to provide a high standard of business & investment education that meets the needs of college students.

According to Bernard Hor, founder of YII, “ The initial idea to set this up was to fill a gap of knowledge in the area of investment amongst teenagers, especially college students. Most of them only start really learning about this much too late.”

As part of the initiative to get college students involved in YII, the group with the help of My Money Tree, has actively pursued student groups in local colleges to start an Investors’ Club . My Money Tree will provide monthly interactive training sessions which would include the use of simulations.

The key to the this programme is its effective learning model which uses various interactive scenarios, whereby participants are given credit cards, cash, investment certifications and put through a ‘mini economy’ in which earning, spending, saving and investing are part of the syllabus in the programme.

At the forthcoming World Congress for Information Technology (WCIT 08), which will be held in Kuala Lumpur beginning 18th May, YII will be presenting their development plans . YII hopes to get interested parties to support their ongoing plans .

Additionally, in recognition of both the need of such programme and the quality of the MONEY TREE Programme, OPEN UNIVERSITY of MALAYSIA (OUM) will be siging a Memorandum with MONEY TREE to enable participants of the programme to qualify for some of its academic and career certifications, thus enabling MONEY TREE graduates to obtain a headstart in building their career future.

MoneyTree Singapore is expecting a few more homes to response to their invitation, and would be working on ensuring a wider reach. This event will be on 27 May 2008, Tuesday from 9.00am to 5.30pm.
